Setting up your Pipeline 50, 75 or 85 for the first time for Internet Access, with NAT
(This document has quoted portions of Ascend's Technical Documents)

You must first obtain this information from your local ISDN provider, which is usually the telephone company:

  • Your Switch Type (the switch that your ISDN provider's local central office is using)
  • Your SPIDs (Service Profile Identifiers) (These looks like the area code + 7 digit phone number + 0101)
  •

Before you begin, and definitely before you can access the Internet, you must setup the router and you will need the following information.
  1. Your User Name (also called Login Name) "firstname_lastname"  (e.g.  john_smith)
  2. Type of  Password Authorization (PAP)Your Password (e.g. funtime)
  3. Your ISP's Domain name (ectisp.net)
  4. Your ISP's DNS IP addresses (e.g. 38.114.25.17 and 38.114.25.22)
  5. The IP Address of the access server you are dialing into (the default route) this is usually close to their DNS addresses (e.g. 38.114.25..1/27)
  6. A phone number to dial to establish a connection to your ISP (9729230521)
You will need to directly "talk" to your Pipeline, this is accomplished by either a serial cable connection (and using something like HyperTerminal), or a telnet connection directly into the router. (Telnetting is done in Windows by clicking  "Start" then "Run" and typing "telnet"  followed by the IP address of your router. (e.g  telnet 192.168.100.100) without the brackets. You must have already accomplished the basic setup of your Pipeline, which gives it an IP address, before you can Telnet  into it.
Be sure to turn everything off  before you do this.

Plug in the ISDN line into the WAN port of the Pipeline, and hook a cable to the Serial  Port of the Pipeline, and the other end to your PC's Serial Port. . (You need to know the Com port COM 1 or COM 2 of the serial connection you made to your PC ). Then open up hyperterminal, and set it up to make a connection to the Pipeline. (Start-Programs-Accessories-Hyperterminal. Then click Hyper Terminal (or equivalent), you want to make a new connection name it "Pipeline". Make the "Connect using" "Direct to Com <whatever your serial port's Comm port is>" In the example below it is Com1. Next time you need to make changes go to Start-Programs-Accessories-Hyperterminal-Pipeline.

Click "OK". Then set parameters like shown below, everything else is the default.

thumb_p752

Click OK again. Now press Ctrl-L (Hold down Ctrl and press L at the same time) on your keyboard this will refresh the screen and you should see the setup screen. If you don't see the Pipeline's Setup screen, try pressing Ctrl-L again. If you still don't see the setup screen check your serial cable and make sure you have the right COM port.

Once you  have established a hyperterminal link to the Pipeline, you need to know how to move around in the menu selections.
Use Ctrl-N to move cursor to the next menu item, or you can use the up and down arrows.
One more thing about moving though the menu the "Esc" key will back you out of a menu.

Next to change the configurations on the router, you will need to get into a edit mode.

Do a Ctrl-D (Hold down Ctrl and press D at the same time.)
Use the up and down arrows.
>P=Password... (Press "Enter")
>Full Access... (Press "Enter")
Enter Password:
[Ascend] (Press "Enter")  Note: Ascend is the default password with capital A

Now if you have typed the right password you will see in the "00-100 Sys Option" status window should show the follow
>Security Prof: 3

Lets get started! Using your up and down arrows keys get to:

Main Edit Menu...
Configure... (Press "Enter") Note: Pressing enter will change the settings in each of the following menus.
Switch Type=NI-1 (as obtained from your ISDN provider)
Chan Usage=Switch/Switch
My Num A=(put in your 1st local 10 digit phone number). (e.g. 9729379768)
(Spaces, periods or hyphens are not necessary.)
My Num B=(put in your 2nd local 10 digit phone number).(e.g. 9729379998)
(Spaces, periods or hyphens are not necessary.)
SPID 1=(your 1st SPID number assigned to you by your ISDN provider. (e.g. 97293797680101)
(Do not include any spaces, periods or hyphens. This is your area code + 7 digit phone number + SPID)
SPID 2=(your 2nd SPID number assigned to you by your ISDN provider. (e.g. 97293799980101)
(Do not include any spaces, periods or hyphens. This is your area code + 7 digit phone number + SPID)
Data Usage=A+B
Phone 1 Usage=A 3.1K audio
Phone 2 Usage=B 3.1K audio
Phone Num Binding=NO
Ans Voice Call=NO (leave at default, but this is up to you)
My Name=firstname_lastname (e.g.  john_smith)
My Addr=192.168.100.100/24 (This is the IP address of your router, the Pipeline)
Rem Name= ectisp.net (The case here is important so use all lower case)
Rem Addr= 38.114.25.1/27
Dial #= Use the local ISDN number list to dial into ECTISP
Route=IP
Bridge=No
Send Auth=PAP
Send PW= funtime Your Password to Login to ECTISP (e.g. funtime)
Recv Auth=NONE
Recv PW=N/A
Save=* (Saves your basic configuration)
Don't forget to save your changes!
Another way of saving your changes is to press the "esc" key to you get to the save config window
and then the press the"2" key.

Once you save your line configurations, your "10-100 Link" status window should show the following:

			 Link "D"

  • NOTE: Your "Link" status window is located at the top/middle of your terminal screen.
  • If you don't see this, try [CTRL] L to refresh your screen.

  •

    If you see Link: "X"

    Then you have a physical layer problem. Check your cabling.a. If you still have a problem, it could be that your ISDN line is not turned on, or the Pipeline's WAN port is faulty. Contact Ascend technical support if you're not sure.

    If you see Link:

    "." (a dot)

    Then you have a logical link problem. This means that your Pipeline and the ISDN provider's central office switch are talking to each other, but not in the same language (they are out of sync). Most likely causes would either be the wrong switch type setting, or the wrong SPIDs.

    Now go back to the:
    Main Edit Menu... (Press "Enter")
    Ethernet... (Press "Enter")
    Static Rtes... (Press "Enter")
    Default... (Press "Enter")
    Name=Default

    Don't forget to save your changes!

    For some reason the Pipeline ships with the service set to 56K. You need to manually change this to 64K in order to get the full benefit of your 64K/128K ISDN connection (unless of course you only have 56K ISDN service).
    This is done as follows:

    Ethernet... (Press "Enter")
    Connections.... (Press "Enter")
    ectisp.net.... (Press "Enter")
    Press the down arrow to you get to:
    Telco Options..... (Press "Enter")
    Go to Data SVC=56K and change that to say 64K. Then save the configuration again.

    Also for the automatic Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) This is what automatically brings up the second channel as needed. to work properly, change your settings Min, Base, and MAX Channels
    Ethernet....(Enter)
    Connections....(Enter)
    ectisp.net (Enter)
    Station=Yes
    Active=Yes
    Encaps=MPP
    Don't forget to save your changes!

    Your line usage needs to match what you have setup with ECTISP 64K or 128K.

    For 64k ISDN account.
    Encaps options...(Enter)
    Base Ch Count=1
    Min Ch Count=1
    Max Ch Count=1
    Don't forget to save your changes!

    For 128k ISDN account.
    Encaps options...(Enter)
    Base Ch Count=2
    Min Ch Count=2
    Max Ch Count=2
    Don't forget to save your changes!
